Our Easter traditions: Greek Easter bread, (τσουρέκι) made by my 11-year-old daughter who loves to bake, an early morning egg hunt, and then we play “Tsougrisma”!
On the first hours of Greek Easter Sunday and right after “Christ has risen,” we crack red eggs, a tradition called “Tsougrisma.” The kids really look forward to this game every year. We play in the morning after our egg hunt is over, when we all meet up again at the table for breakfast. The game has the symbolism of resurrection and new life, and the winner with the egg that doesn’t crack will have good luck!
We also fill (German) Nestler eggs (pictured hiding in the tree branches) with candy and toys. They are big and small cardboard eggs with vintage decoupaged designs on the fronts. The kids all know which ones are theirs from the year before, as we use them over and over. Seeing those big special eggs brings them so much joy!
